HUSH

2019

Who I become in my sleep No eyes and something Frayed ends of the winding thread
Are people I don’t want to be. unremembered, not lost, bleed with shocking bright color
Worlds in my head, chimeric, fumble and fall deeper down pressed under my thumbs when
the parts of me that live in shade. below the line where I meet the sea. bright beats bold.

The photographs in the series Hush explore and recreate the various characters I embody in my dreams. In these fantastic worlds I lose myself and take up new identities such as the woman with no eyes, the boy who rides dragons, the man who sits in his lawn chair, and the girl with too long braids. Taking cues from surrealist paintings and photography, I use isolation, obfuscation, and distortion of each subject to reveal certain details of the dream world and conceal others. The identity of these characters is withheld to reinforce their status as stand-ins for me, the dreamer. Shifts in perspective between images allow the viewer to simultaneously observe the characters and view the dream world from within. By reconstructing and capturing the stories of these mysterious individuals, Hush creates an avenue for exploration of the subconscious and the imagination.
